Patagonia Simple Guide Pants
I have been testing the Patagonia Simple Guide Pants for about the past four months now. This well made softshell pant has become my go to pant for hiking, climbing, snowshoeing and ski touring. Designed for warmer weather use, these pants might be a little light for winter mountaineering. However I see no reason why they can't be used for many other winter activities.
These pants really live up to their name, as Patagonia has removed all the unnecessary features so common with outdoor clothing these days. The welded in reverse coil zippers provide a clean look and feel, while pockets stay out of a harnesses way. I have found the fabric to be nearly windproof yet highly breathable. A few times during very strenuous activity the pants have not been breathable enough, but this is a trade of for high wind resistance.
After months of hard use my pants still look new. The wicking lining still performs well and feels comfortable against skin. The pants seem to fit fairly close to the body, this makes them act like a second skin, a very weatherproof second skin. I leave the rain pants at home, as these resist rain well enough for the Montana climate I live in. (Patagonias Deluge DWR is one of the best I have used) Never has snow penetrated the pants, and wind of only the highest speed can penetrate. There is enough room for a merino base layer and performance and protection is even better in cool weather with this combination.
Overall the only change I could think of making to these pants would be a button on the waist. This might make the pants a little more comfortable to put on. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a durable, comfortable, and good looking pant that can be worn in inclement conditions year round.
