Black Diamond Firstlight

Black Diamond Firstlight Review

The Black Diamond Firstlight tent is a simple lightweight tent built on the famous Bibler I - Tent design. This shelter is basically a much lighter (and nearly as weatherproof) version of the I tent. This is achieved through the use of lightweight materials, EPIC in the canopy and a silnylon floor.

EPIC fabric is not as weatherproof as a laminate but is about 2-3 times more breathable. This makes it an ideal fabric for cold, dry climates. This fabric is both windproof and snowproof. From my testing the EPIC fabric works well in the rain but seems to be better for winter use. Condensation has not been a problem but I live in the rockies I imagine you would run into some condensation issues in more humid climates.

I really like the pitch inside the tent design when the weather is bad you can jump inside with your gear and set up while staying dry. The poles pitched internally seems to make a much stronger more wind resistant tent. The two vents provide great airflow to minimize condensation. From my experience in winter conditions the tent has been up to 20 degrees warmer than outside temperatures.

I fit fine in the tent at a height of 5' 9" but would not recommend this for people over 6'. The tent is sized comfortably for one or snug for two. Weighing around 1.5 lbs per person it is lighter than many bivy sacks but is far more comfortable. It is also possible get away with a lighter bag when using a tent as opposed to a bivy.

One downside of this tent is it does not come seam sealed. This is because EPIC can not be factory taped. So the seam sealing is left for the purchaser. This process is somewhat tedious, but took me under an hour to do. Pay particular attention to the seams on the vents. Silnet seam sealer is included with the tent, its the only seam sealant that can be used on this tent as it is silicone based instead of urethane based like most other seam sealents.

I would recommend this tent to any climber 6' or shorter who needs a simple, lightweight, storm proof, shelter that will sleep two and fit on most ledges on a mountain route.
