Rab Vapour-Rise Trail Pants
The Vapour-Rise Trail Pants make great breathability a priority. This is the original soft shell concept. I have been using these pants over a wool baselayer for quite a while now and have got to say that I made the best possible choice. The pertex equilibrium fabric is very wind and weather resistant yet very breathable. A microfleece lining adds warmth and wicks moisture away from the body.
I have used these pants for snow shoeing, ski tours, ice climbing, and mountaineering with great results. They are fairly minimalist and light but still have the hand pockets which I cannot live without. The fit is true to size and is roomy enough to be worn over a baselayer. I like the adjustable cuff at the ankle that can be sinched up to fit snugly over a pair of boots. These pants are probably good to -5 degrees while moving with a pair of wool bottoms underneath. When it gets colder I recommend a pair of full zip synthetic insulated pants over the top of these.
I have used numerous Rab products and have got to say they are all outstanding. I do believe that these pants are one of their best products and certainly the most versatile. These can be worn 90% of the time and would only need a waterproof shell over them in wet heavy snow conditions. I feel that they resist cold dry snow very well so I really do not need to carry another pair of pants. And if they do get wet they dry very fast. The microfiber shell is very wind resistant, with a wool baselayer wind cannot be felt unless it is really blowing hard.
At 100 bucks these pants are really hard to beat. I have used many softshell pants and these seem to perform the best and cost less. I recommend these if you are looking for a lightweight, weather resistant, breathable pant at a great price. Rating:
